The AV-8B Harrier II multirole attack and close support aircraft was born from a collaboration between the British and U.S. aircraft industries. It represents a significant evolution of the earlier Harrier family of short takeoff/vertical landing (V/STOL) aircraft. The AV-8B was developed and deployed to operate from non-catapult aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, as well as from improvised airstrips. Thanks to these characteristics, it has been widely used by the U.S. Marine Corps, including in operational contexts. Capable of carrying an offensive payload of air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, and air-to-surface missiles, the AV-8B is characterized by its considerable flexibility and the ability to perform a wide variety of missions.
