During WWII the allied armies needed an armored bulldozer for use in dangerous areas. The British Army relied on the Caterpillar D7, armoring the cab area as well as the engine area.
This armored bulldozer came into service during the Normandy landings by the British and American armies. It was used to clear the beaches of obstacles and filling bomb craters.
It was an efficient but slow excavator, so throughout the European campaign it was replaced by other models.
