In 1959, the German companies NSU and Wankel successfully developed a rotary engine that had been independently developed and invented by engineer Dr. Felix Wankel since before the war . This caught the attention of Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. (now Mazda Motor Corporation), who negotiated with NSU and concluded a technical collaboration agreement in 1961. After many hardships before it could be put into practical use, the completed engine was brimming with ideas and technologies not even available at NSU. A low, flowing body was designed to evoke a futuristic and space-like image, befitting this engine , and the car debuted in May 1967 under the name Cosmo Sport (export model was 110S).
